Does PUBG Need a Campaign Mode?

PLAYERUNKOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS has been sweeping the community by storm.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a game shake things up this much, and it’s really fun to live through. Definitely gives me a lot of material to write about.

Anyways, you can’t expect the man himself, Brendan Greene, to make a game this great and not take credit for it in a AMA, so naturally, he did one recently just to answer a lot of the internet’s questions. But I’m not going to go over the entire AMA, there’s just one question that kind of got me thinking,

WOULD PUBG EVER GET A SINGLE PLAYER MODE?

Yeah, that’s kind of an odd question, especially because PUBG is a multiplayer only battle royale game. It’s just a mod that is slowly becoming a full game, and in the process, would it be out of the question to assume we’re going to be getting a single player/story based game mode in the future?

Well, according to Brendan Greene, he’d simply love to.

More specifically, he said: “I would love to add a single player campaign to the game, I think the island we have could be a great location for an interesting story, but unfortunately we just don’t have the time or the resources for this at the moment!”

Yeah, so apparently he would if he could. And that makes sense, considering he’s not actually the head of this project, he’s being heavily backed up by the Korean studio Bluehole, so he’s kind of at their mercy for what he can add to the game. And with the game still in early access, I’d say it’d be smart to perfect the main core of the game, AKA the Battle Royale part, and then maybe get started on a campaign mode. But the thing to consider here is–

DOES PUBG REALLY NEED A SINGLE PLAYER MODE?

Well, the obvious answer here is, yes, if Brendan Greene wants there to be. In the end, this thing is his vision, and Bluehole is here to facilitate it. If he wants there to be a campaign mode, then there will probably be a campaign mode. It’s just that they don’t have the time right now.

But something else to consider is that adding in a single player game mode wouldn’t really be true to the games core, and it might not even be what the community wants.

Yeah, slapping a campaign mode on the end of this would be cool and all, but with that much content, there would probably be a significant price jump, probably all the way to the big six-oh. You’re already driving away people who originally just wanted to play a fun battle royale mode. And what if the campaign (god forbid) sucks complete d**k? Then not only will you have to pay more money, but it’ll be for something low-quality that’s been tacked on. It’s dead weight.

But that’s not to say that it couldn’t all work out in the end. We’ve still got a long way to go before they even think about starting development on any sort of single player mode, so let’s just keep enjoying the fun little game we’ve been given, huh?
